All the Firsts: YouTube

While it may be difficult to remember a time before you looked to YouTube to learn how to tie a tie, what to do if you spill red wine on your favorite sweater, or to simply enjoy some good old fashioned cat videos, in reality the platform has only been around for 11 years.

That’s right: The first ever YouTube video, titled “Me at the zoo,” was uploaded on April 23, 2005 by the platform’s co-founder Jawed Karim. The video is 18 seconds long and features Karim at the zoo, talking into the camera about the elephants behind him. He ends the short clip with, “That’s all I have to say.”

Well that’s all it took. The video now has over 34 million views and YouTube has become the go-to source for how-to videos, parodies, and so much more.

Today, YouTube has over a billion users (that’s almost one-third of all people on the Internet) in more than 88 countries and in 76 languages. More than 400 hours of video are uploaded to the site every minute and the average session for users watching YouTube videos on their mobile phones is a whopping 40 minutes.

Who would have thought an 18-second video could lead to all that?
