Intern Grant

Hailing from good ole Baltimore, MD, Grant has been an intern with FCG for three months now. Just long enough to have a little advice for future interns: “Learn your Vi/Vim or Emacs commands as soon as possible because many of the environments you’ll work in won’t support non-CLI text editors.” Solid advice, Grant. How have you seen yourself grow as a person (or professionally) as a result of your time interning with Freedom?

Personally, I’ve seen my ability to tackle a difficult problem grow. During my time at Freedom, I’ve become more resourceful with reference material and research in order to overcome problems with my work. I’m much more able to power through anything by myself now, which is always a positive for me.

What’s been your favorite part of your internship so far?

Simply put, my favorite part has been learning on the job. In class at college, it can be difficult to get a sense of what current industry practices and trends are, especially in rapidly growing fields like big data. It’s been great to learn how companies like Freedom practically solve these new problems.

How has your internship differed from your expectations?

One thing that pleasantly surprised me was getting a chance to see the administration side of big data systems. I did not expect to get full spectrum view of administering large systems for data processing and analyzation.

What new tricks/tips have you learned since your first day?

I learned about the full stack of data collection to analyzation. Specifically, I am very confident in using MQTT and Hadoop now.
